Tsukimi Kurashita has a strange fascination with jellyfish. She's loved them from a young age and has carried that love with her to her new life in the big city of Tokyo. There, she resides in Amamizukan, a safe-haven for girl geeks who regularly gush over a range of things from trains to Japanese dolls. However, a chance meeting at a pet shop has Tsukimi crossing paths with one of the things that the residents of Amamizukan have been desperately trying to avoid a fashionable socialite! Developed over many years, it offers a completely new account of the relationship between a writer, his or her work, and the reader. As such it radically undermines traditional literary criticism and the various criteria used for evaluating a work of fiction. Drawing on ideas from systemic psychology, Tim Parks suggest that both the content and style of a novelist's work, the kind of stories told and the way in which they are told, form part of a more general strategy or simply habit of communication Catholic Prayers download epub that the novelist has learned within his or her family of origin. The reader reacts to these in very much the same way he or she would react to the same communicative strategy in a real life encounter, different readers reacting differently depending on their own backgrounds and habits of communication.

Paul Duncan,Steve Schapiro: The Godfather Family Album

The Godfather Family Album

Description

This is an offer you can't refuse. It goes behind the scenes of Coppola's masterpiece. As special photographer on the sets and locations of Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather trilogy, Steve Schapiro had the remarkable experience of witnessing legendary actors giving some of their most memorable performances. Schapiro immortalized Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, James Caan, Robert Duvall, and Diane Keaton in photos that have since become iconic images, instantly recognizable and endlessly imitated. Gathered together in this book are Schapiro's finest photographs from all three Godfather films, lovingly reproduced from the original negatives. With contextual essays and interviews covering the trilogy in its entirety, this book contains over 400 color and black & white images. Schapiro's images take us behind the scenes of this epic and inimitable cinematic saga, revealing the director's working process, capturing the moods and personalities involved, and providing insight into the making of movie history.

'Run until you can't run anymore. Then run some more. Find a new source of energy and will. Then run even faster.' The words of Scott Jurek, a dominant force - and darling - in the gruelling and growing sport of ultrarunning for more than a decade. In 1999, as a complete unknown, he took the lead in the Western States Endurance Run, a 100-mile jaunt over the Gold Rush trails of America's Sierra Nevada. He went on to win The Godfather Family Album pdf that race seven years in a row. Jurek was also one of the elite runners who travelled to Mexico to run with the Tarahumara Indians, as profiled in the international bestseller Born to Run. His accomplishments are nothing short of extraordinary. In Eat and Run, Jurek opens up about his life and career as an elite athlete, and about the vegan diet that is key to his success. From his Midwestern childhood of hunting and fishing to his slow transition to ultrarunning and veganism, to his epic, record-breaking races, Jurek's story shows the power of an iron will and the importance of thinking of food as fuel.

Masha Gessen: Where the Jews Aren't

Where the Jews Aren't

Description

"The story of the Jews in twentieth-century Russia as told through the strange history of the Soviet solution to the Jewish question. In 1929, the Soviet Union declared the area of Birobidzhan a homeland for Jews. In the late 1920s and early 1932, tens of thousands of Jews moved to Birobidzhan, chased from the shtetl by poverty, hunger, and fear. Birobidzhan was written about breathlessly by a small group of intellectuals who envisioned a home built by Jews for Jews--a place where Jews worked the land and where Yiddish would become the common language of a post-oppression Jewish culture. The short period of state-building ended in the late 1930s with arrests and purges of the Communist Party and cultural elite. After the Second World War, Birobidzhan, now called the "Jewish Autonomous Region," received a new influx of Jews. These were the dispossessed from what had once been the Pale, and most of them had lost families in the Holocaust. They had no one and no place to return to. Once again, in the late 1940s, a wave of arrests swept through Birobidzhan, frightening the Jews into silence and making them invisible. WHERE THE JEWS AREN'T is the story of the dream of Birobidzhan--and how it became a nightmare. In Masha Gessen's haunting and haunted account, Birobidzhan becomes the cracked and crooked mirror that allows us to see the story of the history of absence and silence that is the story of Jews in twentieth-century Russia"--

Julian Baggini: Freedom Regained: The Possibility of Free Will

Freedom Regained: The Possibility of Free Will

Description

Do we have free will? It's a question that has puzzled philosophers and theologians for centuries and feeds into numerous political, social, and personal concerns. Are we products of our culture, or free agents within it? How much responsibility should we take for our actions? Are our neural pathways fixed early on by a mixture of nature and nurture, or is the possibility of comprehensive, intentional psychological change always open to us? What role does our brain play in the construction of free will, and how much scientific evidence is there for the existence of it? What exactly are we talking about when we talk about 'freedom' anyway? In this cogent and compelling book, Julian Baggini explores the concept of free will from every angle, blending philosophy, neuroscience, sociology and cognitive science. Freedom Regained brings the issues raised by the possibilities - and denials - of free will to vivid life, drawing on scientific research and fascinating encounters with expert witnesses, from artists to addicts, prisoners to dissidents. Contemporary thinking tells us that free will is an illusion, and Baggini challenges this position, providing instead a new, more positive understanding of our sense of personal freedom: a freedom worth having.

This multi-purpose text can be used as an introduction to predictive models and the overall modeling process, a practitioner's reference handbook, or as a text for advanced undergraduate or graduate level predictive modeling courses. To that end, each chapter contains problem sets to help solidify the covered concepts and uses data available in the book's R package. Readers and students interested in implementing the Freedom Regained: The Possibility of Free Will free epub methods should have some basic knowledge of R. And a handful of the more advanced topics require some mathematical knowledge. Mary Pipher s groundbreaking investigation of America s girl-poisoning culture, "Reviving Ophelia," established its author as one of the nation s foremost authorities on family issues. In"Letters to a Young Therapist," Pipher shares what she has learned in thirty years of clinical practice, helping warring families, alienated adolescents, and harried professionals restore peace and beauty to their lives. Through an exhilarating mix of storytelling and sharp-eyed observation, Pipher reveals her refreshingly inventive approach to therapyfiercely optimistic, free of dogma or psychobabble, and laced with generous warmth and practical common sense. Whether she s recommending daily swims for a sluggish teenager, encouraging a timid husband to become bolder, or simply bearing witness to a bereaved parent s sorrow, Pipher s compassion and insight shine from every page. Newly updated with a preface by the author addressing the changes in therapy over the last decade and the surprising challenges of the digital age, "Letters to a Young Therapist" is a powerfully engaging guide to living a healthy life.

The Best Book of Useless Information Ever: A Few Thousand Other Things You Probably Don't Need to Know (But Might as Well Find Out)

Description

From the creators of the #1 "New York Times" bestseller "The Book of Useless Information" comes another enlightening, entertaining, and ultimately useless assortment of trivia. If you find yourself transfixed by the most trivial of trivia, or mesmerized by the most minor of minutiae, The Useless Information Society's latest findings can satisfy your every need. This wide-ranging collection will fill every nook and cranny of your brain with information you'll surely never need, but will enjoy learning anyway! Did you know... - that penguins can jump six feet out of the water? - that everyone is color-blind at birth? Would you care to know... - what the first meal eaten on the moon was? - what country drinks the most Coca-Cola? (Hint: It's not the United States.) In 1995, a secret society was formed comprising Britain's foremost thinkers, writers, and artists to trade and share in useless information (or, as founding member Keith Waterhouse, playwright and journalist, would have it, "totally bloody useless").

Mr. Willy Wonka might be a genius with chocolate, but Charlie and his family don t trust his flying skills one bit. And right now, he s at the helm of a giant glass elevator that s picking up speed and hurtling through space with Charlie and the entire Bucket family stuck inside! Roald Dahl s uproarious sequel to "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" is certain to delight and entertain a new generation of readers." Draw yourself a tattoo (on paper!). This introductory manual was written to provide prospective olive growers (both city people looking for a change in lifestyle and existing farmers) with information that may assist them to avoid some of the pitfalls and if nothing else understand what olive farming is about. It is not intended to be a detailed scientific study that contains all the answers. Since I opened the Olive Shop to compliment my farming enterprise, I have had many queries from people wanting to know more about growing the noble fruit. I hope this publication provides answers to some of The Best Book of Useless Information Ever: A Few Thousand Other Things You Probably Don't Need to Know (But Might as Well Find Out) download book the questions posed and points to some of the important areas that will require further research.

The End of the Third Age

Description

The End of the Third Age is comprised of the first section of the hardcover volume published as Sauron Defeated, the ninth volume of The History of Middle-earth. The End of the Third Age begins with Sam's rescue of Frodo from the Tower of Kirith Ungol, and giving a very different account of the Scouring of the Shire, this part ends with versions of the hitherto unpublished Epilogue, in which, years after the departure of Bilbo and Frodo from the Grey Havens, Sam attempts to answer his children's questions. The book is illustrated with changing conceptions of Kirith Ungol and Mount Doom, as well as previously unpublished drawings of Orthanc and Dunharrow.

Treating Postnatal Depression: A Psychological Approach for Health Care Practitioners download book

Jeannette Milgrom,Paul R. Martin,Lisa M. Negri: Treating Postnatal Depression: A Psychological Approach for Health Care Practitioners

Treating Postnatal Depression: A Psychological Approach for Health Care Practitioners

Description

When mothers feel depressed in the months after childbirth, their feelings have often been dismissed as understandable reactions to the stress of caring for a new baby, perhaps complicated by family and marital demands. Most mothers cope, with varying degrees of support and success, but for many the neglect and misunderstanding of postnatal emotional problems can lead to long-term difficulties, with implications for their families as well as for mental health services. This book provides an understanding of depression following childbirth which draws together current theories and a synthesis of key research with a framework for intervention. It provides a novel way of thinking about postnatal depression, and a treatment program which is based on this model. The clinical programs and interventions which are outlined have been found to be effective at reducing postnatal depression. These programs are aimed at developing coping skills in women which: Reduce the symptoms of postnatal depression Improve maternal functioning in terms of self-esteem, assertiveness and coping Address marital and partner difficulties which often arise Deal with parent-infant difficulties the may exist Facilitate the use and development of existing social networks The authors have reviewed current knowledge on postnatal depression, and given guidelines for best practice in a variety of approaches to treatment and prevention, Included is a detailed account of a tried-and-tested 10-week treatment program, together with materials and resources that a busy clinician might need to implement a similar program. Treating postnatal Depression will be a valuable resource for clinical psychologists, counsellors, psychiatrists, nurses, health visitors, midwives and other professionals who need to understand and deal with the emotional problems of mothers and babies. "A very readable book which presents an excellent overview of this important topic, and allows the authors to share their wealth of clinical experience in the clinical management of depressed mothers." Professor Peter Lewinsohn, University of Oregon "This book is a very timely and accessible approach for health care workers who treat women with postnatal depression Medical interventions alone are rarely adequate in the management of this disorder, an understanding of the psychological issues is essential, and this comprehensive manual, which deals with how to approach the complexities of the disorder, will aid workers significantly and, ultimately, benefit those who are suffering." Professor Anne Buist, University of Melbourne Austin & Repatriation Medical Centre

Peter. Lola. Blossom. Abigail. Oliver. Five sixteen-year-old orphans. One by one, they are brought to a place that is unlike anything any of them has ever known. It's not a prison, not a hospital. It has no walls, no ceiling, no floor. Nothing but endless flights of stairs leading nowhere - except back to the red machine. The five will learn to love the machine, will let it rule their lives. But will they let it kill their souls? In the small Bosnian town of Visegrad the stone bridge of the novel's title, built in the sixteenth century on the instruction of a grand vezir, bears witness to three centuries of conflict. Visegrad has long been a bone of contention between the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian Empires, but the bridge survives unscathed until 1914, when the collision of forces in the Balkans triggers the outbreak of World War I. The bridge spans generations, nationalities and creeds, silent testament to the lives played out on it. Radisav, a workman, tried to hinder its construction and is impaled alive on its highest point; beautiful Fata leaps from its parapet to escape an arranged marriage; Milan, inveterate gamble, risks all in one last game on it. With humour and compassion, Andric chronicles History of Interior Design free pdf the lives of Catholics, Moselms and Orthodox Christians unable to reconcile their disparate loyalties.

A Child of the Jago

Description

'The Jago had got him, and it held him fast.' In the worst of London's East End slums, in an area called the Jago, young Dicky Perrott is used to a life of poverty, crime, and violence. Gang warfare is the order of the day, deaths are commonplace, and thieving the only way to survive. At first Dicky dreams of becoming a High Mobsman - one of the aristocrats of Jago crime - but the efforts of Father Sturt to improve conditions offer him a different path. Dicky's journey takes him through a savage but colourful community of pickpockets and cosh-carriers, where the police only enter in threes, and where murder erupts with an unusual horror and intimacy. Morrison's portrayal of the Victorian underclass and its underworld drew attention to the bleak prospects for children living in such surroundings, and it is a classic of slum-fiction. In this edition Peter Miles provides a rich contextual background to the creation of the novel, and the social debates to which it contributed. The Divine Conspiracy Continued: Fulfilling God's Kingdom on Earth

Description

Dallas Willard, the author of the bestselling spiritual classic, The Divine Conspiracy, now fulfills his revolutionary vision of how the kingdom of God is made real on earth in this sequel, the last book he was working on before his recent death. In 'The Divine Conspiracy', revered Christian philosopher and scholar Dallas Willard critiqued the church's obsession with 'sin management' and revolutionised our understanding of true Christian discipleship. Jesus is not a remote saviour, waiting to welcome us into heaven after we die, Willard argued. He is a dynamic living force, a leader and teacher to whom we apprentice ourselves to learn the sacred skills God wants us to embrace, and to fulfil His son's vision when Christ declared that the 'kingdom of God has come.' In 'The Divine Conspiracy Continued', co-written with theologian Gary Black, Willard lays out the next stage in God's plan as this generation of disciples, including ordained and lay leaders, step into positions of authority across our culture and begin to transform the world from the inside out. To fulfil the Christian calling is not to remove oneself from the outside world and take shelter from its shortcomings, Willard reminds us, but to step into the world to lead and serve as agents of change.

This book represents an attempt to distil from the science of vocal acoustics those factors that are essential for teachers at the beginning of the twenty-first century to understand, that are most likely to be productive for improving our pedagogic efficiency, and to present them in language that is generally accessible. It also aspires to contribute to more productive, mutually respectful and beneficial conversation between the pedagogic and scientific communities. America s favorite poet. " The Wall Street Journal" Ronald Lacey the Little Mermaid Fairy download PDF Decker, first-time San Quentin intern doing minor time for an insignificant offence, is befriended by hardened old-timer Earl Copen and introduced into the White Brotherhood. When Ron rejects a homosexual advance by another con the pair are led to an act of ultimately fatal violence and, in desperation, seize a remote chance of escape.
